Teeth loss can occur for a variety of reasons, including cavities, diseases of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, trauma to the teeth or jaw, and so on. Replacement by fixed teeth is the preferred option whenever possible and convenient. However, in some cases, the condition of the teeth or jaws makes replacement with fixed teeth impossible (financial). The most preferred options are complete denture replacement in cases of complete tooth loss or removable partial denture or cast partial denture replacement in cases where some teeth remain. The remaining bone and soft tissues after tooth loss are referred to as residual ridges or Edentulous arches. Complete dentures are designed to be precisely seated on residual ridges in order to provide maximum support. The amount of fit and support that the dentures can provide is determined by the number of residual ridges that remain. Because the upper arch has more area, it is more suited to retention than the lower arch, which has smaller arches. Also in the lower arch, muscle attachments, and tongue movements make denture retention more difficult. When the number of missing teeth exceeds what fixed teeth or a removable complete denture can replace, a removable partial denture is the best option. In cases where long-span teeth must be replaced, proper fit of teeth cannot be achieved with fixed teeth, and there are bone and soft tissue defects or a greater number of spaces between teeth or more bone loss with existing teeth present adjacent to lost teeth, removable partial dentures are the better option.
